Colin Firth 于 1960 年 9 月 10 日出生于英国汉普郡的 Grayshott 。 Colin 的祖父母是卫理公会派的传教士（Methodist missionary），父母都是大学讲师。对于父母的工作， Colin 曾说，“ Yes, they're still doing it now. They're endlessly study and teach various courses. They're just relentlessly curious people. ”[Radio interview 2001，] Colin 的妹妹， Kate ，现在是一名 voice coach ；弟弟， Jonathan ，也是一名演员。

父母的工作令 Colin 又在 12 岁时来到了美国密苏里州的圣路易斯。据 Colin 回忆，他在美国的一年过得并不愉快。由于教育体制的差异， Colin 比班上的学生都要小一些，因而令他觉得周围的孩子都过于世故，很难适应。他说，“ I sometimes look back over my school years and wonder if I really learned anything. ”[Freshair radio interview 2001]Colin 的父亲则说，“ He would have found it difficult fitting in at any school, partly because of moving and partly because he wanted to go off and follow his own interests. He started a band with some friends, playing the guitar and being the lead singer. ”[The Mirror 2001]
回到英国后，全家定居在了温切斯特。父亲在 King Alfred's College 任历史讲师，母亲在一所函授大学教比较宗教（comparative religion）， Colin 则进了 Montgomery Of Alamein 中学。学校的老师并不喜欢 Colin，但 Colin 认为，“ I had the intelligence, but never worked out how to do exams. Arrogance got me through school. ”[The Mirror 2001]
那时的 Colin 也算是个问题少年（看不出来呀），他邋遢，傲慢，逃学，留长发，穿耳洞，年轻气盛的 Colin 有种毫无容身之地的感觉。
Colin 进了 Eastleigh 附近的 Barton Peveril 6 th Form College 。那里他终于可以随心所欲地留长发，佩戴闪亮的珠片，听自己喜欢的 Prog Rock （他最喜欢的是 Genesis 和 King Crimson）。
朋克风潮的到来并未影响到 Colin 。他只是个 elegantly wasted freedom fighter 。 Colin 在 14 就立志要当个演员。但那时的 Colin 却觉得正离自己的理想越来越远。于是 18 岁的 Colin 决定放弃大学，只身来到伦敦。
他一边寻找 drama school ，一边在 National Youth Theatre 和 ShawTheatre 里演一些报酬低廉的小角色，他还到 Laurence Oliver's National Theatre 的 wardrobe department 里做 tea boy ，最后他终于如愿以偿进了伦敦著名的 Drama Centre 。
但在 Drama Centre 里的学习生活十分艰苦。 Colin 那时住在 North London 的一间破旧的 bedsit 里，他每周要上 6天的课。 Colin 的一位朋友回忆说，“ I went to see him and he didn't have much money – he had holes in the shoes and was going to walk two miles to a play. ”[The Mirror 2001]
Colin 在 Drama Centre 学习了 3 年（1980 – 1983），在一系列戏剧里（如 Tartuffe， King Lear， Cat On A Hot Tin Roof 等）担任主角。其中尤以其表演的 Hamlet 最为令人印象深刻。该校的创始者 Yat Malmgren 曾说，“ He was the kind of student who almost never occurs. Colin 的演出令 Rupert Everett 印象深刻。于是 Rupert Everett 推荐 Colin Firth 参加 Another Country 电影版的演出。（这是 Colin 的首部电影作品）因为 Rupert Everett 早已签约饰演 Guy Bennet ， Colin 就出演了 Tommy Judd 一角。这是个极具原则性的角色，藐视权贵和虚伪，公开支持共产主义。这一角色的性格与 Colin 青少年时期的经历十分相似，自然影片与 Colin Firth 都取得了相当的成功。 Colin 说，“ It came as an enormous surprise. I was priming myself for years of struggle just to get an audition for a repertory company. But I had an agent, I was employed, and I was a member of Equity all in a few months – I began that year not even knowing I was going to play Hamlet and I finished that year having done a film. It was a shock. ”[Attitude Mag. 1997]
接下来 Colin 又参加了一系列电视剧和戏剧的演出。
1987 年， Colin Firth 出演了 Pat O' Connor 导演的 A Month In The Country 。该片讲述的是一战后人们的生活。 Colin 演的是个退役军人，在一家古老的教堂里修复壁画，同时也修复自己的心灵。这是部非常英国化的电影，一部探索真相和道德的电影。
次年， Colin 出演了 Apartment Zero 。这是部有点奇怪的电影。 Colin 演的是一个抑郁的 cine-club 的老板。场景设在布宜诺斯艾利斯，拍摄期间，该地区发生的一系列政治枪杀事件为该片蒙上了一层奇特而可怕的色彩。
1988 年，著名导演 Milos Forman 邀请 Colin Firth 在自己的古装戏 Valmont 里担任主角。不幸的是，由于另一部讲述 Valmont 故事的影片 Dangerous Liaisons 的巨大成功，（并且该片还比 Valmont 早发行数月），因此令此片遭到惨败。（ Michelle Pfeiffer 也曾拒绝了 Valmont 中 Merteuil 的角色，转而接受了 Dangerous Liaisons 中 Madame de Tourvel 一角，她的角色则由 Annette Bening 接任。）
不过 Valmont 一片却令 Colin Firth 结识了其前女友 Meg Tilly 。（ Meg Tilly 后来为Colin 生了个儿子， Will ）
演完 Valmont 不久， Colin Firth 发现自己陷入了一场更为激烈的争议中。这一争议是由其出演的电视电影 Tumbledown 引起的。该片令英国政府不得不反思他们对待战后老兵的种种做法。
Colin拒绝了不少好莱坞电影（他说这是出于“ snobbery and fear ”）。却要求能在 Wings Of Fame 中与 Peter O' Tool 演对手戏。
接下来，是 Femme Fatale ，再接着 1991 年， Colin 又在 Comedy Theatre 演了 Harold Pinter 的 The Caretaker . 1999]
随后整整两年里， Colin Firth 就像消失了似的。主要是因为他和 Meg Tilly 的关系日益密切，同为声名所累的俩人来到 British Columbia （加拿大的原始森林），在一幢小木屋里共同生活。他们一起做家具，Colin 还写写小说。但 British Columbia 是个荒凉的地方，而且那里的生活太艰难了，有时雪大的会令他们无法出门。渐渐的， Colin 感到了压力，他又怀念起了自己钟爱的表演工作。于是他向几家温哥华剧院递了简历，却未得到一丝回应。最后 Colin 结束了与 Meg Tilly 五年的关系回到了英国。回顾这段恋爱，Colin 说，“ Neither Meg nor I worked a great deal in the first few years – we were more into being a family. We decided to get out for while and only later discovered that no one miss you when you're not in the picture. We stayed in Canada because I had no ambition to work in Hollywood and she hasn't been able to base herself in England. ”
此时的Colin 一切都得从头开始了。他演了几部戏剧和电视，但生活条件依然不太理想。于是他接了几部并不好的电影但收入颇丰，并坦言，“ just to make money ”。“ It was a three week job and paid extremely well. It was quite a gamble but I went out there knowing that it would be complete rubbish about committing yourself to a long, low paid theatre engagement. There is a time when you have to make a compromise but it hasn't happened too often. 1995 年， Colin Firth 的机会来了。他出演了 Pride & Prejudice 中的 D'Arcy ，迷倒了万千女性观众。当他在荧幕上逐渐虏获了 Elizabeth Bennet 的芳心时，他和 Elizabeth Bennet 的扮演者 Jennifer Ehle 也假戏真做，谈起了恋爱。可惜他们的关系只维持了一年。
Pride & Prejudice 的成功使 Colin 逐渐忙碌了起来，他还说，“ it's easier to get a table in a restaurant ”。
Pride & Prejudice 后， Colin 还演了 D.H. Lawerence 写的 The Widowing Of Mrs Holroyd，仍是 BBC 改编的电视电影。
1996 年是重要的一年。 Colin 参演了 The English Patient ，该片获得了众多奥斯卡奖项。 Colin 在演电视剧 Nostromo 期间，结识了他现在的意大利妻子 Livia Guiggioli，Livia 是名纪录片制作人，俩人于 1997 年在 Tuscany成婚。（Livia 为 Colin 生了两个儿子， Luca 和 Mateo）
Colin 的生活和工作开始日趋稳定，他接拍了不少电影，还在 2001 年出版了他的第一部短篇小说， The Department Of Nothing ，故事是以一个 11 岁的男孩的视角展开的。 Colin 说，“ writing has been a hobby of mine for years. I enjoy it. I love storytelling. I read, and I like to write and think things up. I've never had a huge ambition to be published, so it has remained a kind of hobby. I sometimes exchange stories with friends. I have a couple of friends who also write a little bit, and it's often been just to appeal to somebody's sense of humor as much as anything else. But, yes, I do. [Freshair interview 2001]这一年， Colin 又演了回 D'Arcy，这就是广受好评的Bridget's Diary。
