BREAD通常都是指面包。通常英美人吃的时候会在上面涂BUTTER,于是就有了bread and butter.
1-可以作为形容词表示。基本的，日常的，实用的。
2-对所受款待表示感谢的。例如:"After spending the weekend as a guest in the jone's home,Alice wrote the joneses the usual bread-and-butter letter."(爱丽丝周末在琼斯家做客以后，给他们夫妇写了例行的感谢信）。
3-平凡的，庸俗的。例如:"They asked some bread-and-butter questions."（他们问了几个普通的问题）。
4-孩子气，女生派头的。例如:"She is still a bread-and-butter miss."(她还是个女学生模样的姑娘）。
同时，Butter的油性意思也可以有其他搭配和意思。
butter up=巴结，讨好
Butter to butter is no relish.(千篇一律的东西让人生厌）。
CHEESE要比BUTTER好吃，在英美人的口味里。
所以
BIG CHEESE=大人物
WHOLE CHEESE=自以为很重要的大人物
HARD CHEESE就是厄运，倒霉的意思。例如:"It's hard cheese for him if he can't go to the cinema with us."(他要是不能跟我们一起去看电影，那真是不走运）。
