KEIRA KNIGHTLEY had a furious row with boyfriend Rupert Friend after she spent a night on the town with Scots actor James McAvoy.

Friend blew a fuse after Keira went out with co-star James for a drink after a hard day working on new film Atonement.

But Pirates Of The Caribbean star Keira told him his jealously had hit "new heights of insanity" and pointed out that McEvoy is engaged to actress Anne-Marie Duff.

Friend, 23, hit back saying: "Anyone would chuck away an engagement ring for a night with Keira Knightley."

Keira and McAvoy are filming Iain McEwan's novel Atonement in Shropshire and London. Glasgowborn James shot to fame as Steve in TV's Shameless and starred as Mr Tumnus in The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe.

A friend of Keira's said: "Keira did enjoy a night out with James but they are just friends and everyone knows he is happily engaged.

"She has told Rupert to get off her back or get out her life. Keira is a 21-year-old girl and a bit of a free spirit.

"Rupert's behaviour has been edging towards the overbearing and this latest tantrum made her issue him the ultimatum."

The pair met last year while filming Pride And Prejudice, when he played the caddish Mr Wickham to her Elizabeth Bennet.

Insiders say Rupert's jealousy is compromising his career and he has even nicknamed himself the 'fifth element' reflecting the lowly status he has in Keira's life.

He is currently filming Outlaw in Gloucestershire with Sean Bean and Bob Hoskins.

An insider said: "He has not endeared himself to most of the crew because of his surly moods and spends most of his time attempting to get reception on his mobile phone to call Keira. He wants her for himself but Keira likes to put herself first, her work second and family third.

"He has said he figures fifth after her friends, who are in fourth place. That's why he calls himself 'the fifth element'."

Rupert was also warned to calm down by Keira's older brother Caleb, 27.

A friend said: "Keira refused to answer the phone to Rupert and he called 10 times in a row.

"Caleb eventually picked up the phone and told him to stop."

The couple have barely spent any time together recently.

At the after-show party for Pirates Of The Caribbean 2 Keira was asked if she was going to take time off to spend with Rupert.

She said: "I'm going to take time off because of myself mainly, not because of him.

"Let's see how things go there."
