20 years after 'Field of Dreams,' Kevin Costner still connects with Iowa
Costner's time in Iowa is something that seems to have stuck with him. He still counts his time here as some of his deepest, both musically and emotionally. Modern West's web site says this about the Leland visit: "It turned out to be one of the best musical experiences for the band."
"Those are really my words and a sentiment of everybody there also," Costner said of the post.
And the connection reaches further than guitarist John Coinman's family ties to Leland.
"I actually did a movie called 'The Postman.' Playing in the diner and playing up in the barn reminded me of the communal feeling that people have ... what a song when it's specifically tied to a community can mean. When people are putting dimes in that jar, that's kind of special," Costner said referring to the glass carafe that sits on the counter at Mitchell's Diner, which became the inspiration for the "Leland Iowa" lyrics that read, "You can't spend a dime in Leland Iowa."
Even with his easy, approachable nature and anti-superstar demeanor, Costner is still a big Hollywood name and garners attention wherever he goes.
This summer, however, he is sharing that spotlight with a few others in the state.
Adrien Brody has been spotted bicycling through the East Village and Forest Whitaker smiling on 7th Street -- both are in town filming the psychological thriller "The Experiment."
Costner, who was not aware of Iowa's movie tax credits during the interview, said he would consider bringing one of his own films to the Hawkeye State.
"Oh, that would be a simple decision. Yes, of course."
And Iowa's movie tax credit, which began in 2007, could make that more of a reality.
Costner is scheduled to head to the Southwest in early 2010 to direct "Little War of Our Own," what he calls "a period piece ... set on the border."
"I'm going to New Mexico for my next movie, and it's purely because of their incentives," he said. "(The tax credit) does make a difference, a huge one. It's the difference between sometimes even the film being able to be made."
The New Mexico shoot follows a trip to Italy in the fall, where Costner says he will film the comedy "Learning Italian."
While he's there, he hopes to fly Modern West out to record new material for the follow-up to its first album, "Untold Truths." Those in attendance at the shows in Iowa this week will be in luck-they'll get a sneak peek at potential material for the new album.
"You're going to hear six, seven new songs if you come," Costner said.

Since filming "Field of Dreams," Costner has returned to Iowa not only as an actor but also as a part of a music act, touring with his country rock band Modern West.
"When I'm in Iowa, I feel like it's very easy for me to just get along with the people," he said by phone Saturday.
Costner and his band will perform two shows in Iowa — today in Clear Lake and Tuesday in Davenport.
This is the band's third trip to the state this year. In January, it performed in a Leland barn and diner, then returned for a 900-fan sellout show at People's Court in Des Moines.
"Our music and how (Iowans) receive it has just been a really good match."
