American Beauty prompts and questions
We invent the places we see.
What do you think about the boy with the camera? How does he invent what he sees? How does Lester(Jane's father) invent what he sees, and what changes does he make to evidence this? What do you think about how the other characters invent their lives(the mom, Jane Jane's friend, the boy with camera again, his parents)?
We carry our sense of home inside us.
What do you think about how Jane and her boyfriend will respond to moving to New York? What about Lester? His death even? Do you think he was able to fully escape, in the few days before he died, his pitiful life?
All of the significant movement we ever take is internal.
Do you think, from your own experience and from talking with others, that external change is the key to change for the better, or do you think that internal change is what matters? How do the chatacters in the film show the different types of change? Do internal and external changes balance each other out? Give examples from you own life, and from the stories and film and pictures that I've assigned.

We invent what we see based on our memory, but sometimes our memory could cheat us. Ricky(the boy with a camera) recorded everything that he thought is beautiful, and the video he took is what the fact is, then he invent what he sees with his imagination. So to some extent, his view is more objective than the other characters in the film or even us. Lester invent what he sees with his fantasy, and he started to work out in the garage or jog with neighbours to evidence his fantasy.
Jane and Ricky(Jane's boyfriend) know each other very well, and they choose to live together. they will start to live in their own way for the first time in their life, no matter what the result could be. Lester was not escaping his pitiful life in the few days before he died. He was trying to make a change, but no one understands his behaviour or even pays any attention to that. The tragedy came while he was changing, so his death is just a part of his pitiful life.
It is hard to tell which is more important between external change and internal change, that depends on different personality. Most of the chatacters in the film show external change to us, because no one could read other's mind, and we don't know what their internal change is, except themselves. Internal and external changes could balance each other out, but it takes time. So in my opinion, there is no need to talk about myself if there is no change in the end.
