THOMAS KRETSCHMANN (ACTOR - KLAUS)
has caused quite a stir in Hollywood for his ever expanding body of work including his dead-on villainous performance in Universal’s U-571; his starring role in Oscar-nominated Italian director Pupi Avati’s The Knights of the Quest; Blade 2: Bloodlust; Unleashed; King Kong and perhaps Kretschmann’s most talked about performance in The Pianist opposite Academy Award winner Adrian Brody.
Kretschmann was born into 1960’s in East Germany and at a young age was enrolled in East Germany’s national swimming school, where he was essentially forced to become one of the country’s best swimmers. When a Communist boycott halted his athletic rise he escaped from East Germany with 300 Deutschmarks (US $100) and a passport, he set on foot, alone, crossed four borders into Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria and finally West Germany and arrived in West Berlin without knowing a single person. He was 18 years old and free.
Thomas was determined to take full advantage of his hard fought freedom, and pursue his long-suppressed dream of becoming an actor. Within a few short years, he was asked to join the Schillertheater Company, the West German equivalent to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. In 1991, Thomas made his film debut in Der Mitwisser, winning the German’s prestigious Max-Ophuls Prize for Best Up and Coming Actor. His appearance in the World War II epic Stalingrad thrust Thomas into the international spotlight. He went on to star in Queen Margot, Marching in the Dark, Darlo Argento’s The Stendahl Syndrome and Prince Valiant, among other European films.
