Send In The Clowns是一首带著丁点儿血腥味黑色幽默的失恋歌。该歌曲出自桑岱姆的百老汇音乐剧经典《小夜曲》（A Little Night Music），这部音乐剧取材自瑞典电影大师英格玛柏格曼（Ingmar Bergman）的《夏夜微笑》（Smiles of a Summer Night），描述二十世纪初期瑞典一群男女的浪漫爱情。剧情讲的是一名女子，爱情老是不顺利，总是因为些愚蠢、微不足道的事情和情人分手，於是她有感而发，唱了这首歌。
失恋叫小丑进来干嘛呢？这里的典故来自马戏团，马戏团喜欢讲The Show Must Go On，对，Pink Floyd就唱过一首The Show Must Go On。马戏团里不管出了什么事，不管老虎咬了人，还是出了什么意外，反正秀一定要继续，所以呢，就会有小丑出场，转移大家的注意。
既然是马戏团，一开始讲的Me here at last on the ground and you in mid-air，我终於躺在地上，你还在空中漂荡，指的应该是空中飞人。失恋就像是你纵身一跳，搭档却没有接住你，所以，你躺在那裡，筋摧骨折，满地鲜血。这个时候，很糗很丑很痛很难过很不知所措，当然，赶快叫小丑进来。
虽然歌词既有感慨又有自嘲色彩，但音乐却相当舒展深情，一点没有调侃的味道，反倒让人感到一份饱经沧桑后的心酸和无奈，因而也分外动人。
