在那个悲惨的凌晨之前，大卫·卡拉丁早有过自杀的想法。04年他曾公开表示想用抽屉中的一把科尔特点四五自杀，"Look, there was a period in my life when I had a single action Colt 45, loaded, in my desk drawer. And every night I'd take it out and think about blowing my head off, and then decide not to and go on with my life. Put it back in the drawer and open up the laptop and continue writing my autobiography or whatever. But it was just to see."
他阴郁的自杀想法还不仅于此。大卫·卡拉丁也是个音乐家，在他自己的网站上，他创作的歌中，有一支叫做"Big Mack Truck" (MACK 是卡车的牌子)，歌词是这样写的：
