Almost all of us are keen on freedom, and have imagined several times how perfect the Utopia would be, or at least would admire the courage William Wallace has to strive for the freedom in Brave Heart. But when we're really confronted with freedom, how would we act? Maybe most of us would be lost as the old Brooks does. The reason is that we've been institutionalized as Red explains. The regulations in prison are to some extent the same thing as the laws in human society. First you hate them, then you get used to them. Enough time passed, get so you depend on them. That's why Red can' piss without permission. We've been deprived of many dreams because of it. The scissorshand Edward, who hasn't been institutionalized, would give the money he picks in the street to his lover, which is illegal in our society. That's why I'm deeply touched when finding with the belief of innocence, Andy Dufresne have been pursuing his dream with a 6-inch-long rock hammer for 20 years. It's hard to define whether being institutionalized is a good thing or a bad thing, but pursuing truth by overcoming numerous immense difficulties will definitely receive respect.
