A Thief
Someone is knocking at the door;
Who may it be.
It is a man. I am a family friend.
I let him in, leave him there and go out.
Descending the steps, I encounter papa and mama,
Going up toward me.
A friend is waiting for you.
They enter our home and I’m looking at them slowly disappearing.
But mama stretches her head out of the half-opened door,
Informing me the man is a thief, trying to rob our apartment.
Oh, why? Why did I let a stranger in without suspicion,
And let him stay. Ridiculous enough!
Mama asks me to go and get help from Mr. J,
Also a family friend, waiting for papa and mama downstairs,
By his car. So I go.
The three succeed in bring the thief under control, but he is
not at all tamed,
Spasmodically, cursing and saying something mysterious that I can
neither understand nor remember.
For some unknown reason, they let him go.
All of a sudden, I scream,
Run, Mr. J run.
He is going to make off with your car.
